European ships sent to Asia for breaking.

“365 end-of-life ships were sent by European-based shipping companies to South Asia in 2012. Greek shipowners sent 167 ships, or nearly half of all ships sent by European shipowners in 2012. German shipowners sent 48 ships followed by shipowners from the UK (30 ships), Norway (23 ships), Cyprus (13 ships), Bulgaria (8 ships), Denmark (6 ships) and the Netherlands (5 ships). Shipowners from all countries, except the Netherlands and Norway, increased the number of end-of-life ships exported to Asia compared to 2011, with Italian shipowners sending three times as many ships in 2012 and Switzerland, more than four times as many ships. The rest was sent by shipowners based in Estonia (3 ships), Sweden (3 ships), Lithuania (2 ships), Belgium (2 ships), Romania (2 ships), Latvia (1 ship) and Poland (1 ship).

ABOUT THE LIST

The European origin of the ships is determined either by their use of a European/EFTA flag (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein) and/or because the last owner of the ship before the shipbreakers bought it was European-based. We have chosen to use the last beneficial owner of the ship as a reference in all previous reports. As defined by maritime database Lloyd’s List, the beneficial owner “may be the vessel’s management company or the trading name of a group, both of which are generally perceived to represent the ultimate owners of the vessel”. Therefore when looking at the report both these factors need to be taken into account when considering the data. The only destinations for end-of-life ships taken into account in this report, as for the Platform’s previous reports, are Gadani in Pakistan; Alang, Sachana, and Mumbai in India; and Chittagong in Bangladesh. Some ships may be missing from this list, which does not pretend to be exhaustive. Some data are provided by the industry on a voluntary basis. The list was compiled using Lloyd’s List, Intermodal, Robin des Bois reports, Equasis, and other relevant sources.”

Rise in dry bulk scrapping in 2013

(SeeNews) - Feb 21, 2013 - The scrapping activity in the dry bulk sector will increase in 2013 with the average age of scrapped vessels dropping further, as shipowners are trying to find employment for their ships amid weak demand, UK-based Drewry Shipping Consultants said.
The average age of vessels of the smallest Handysize segment sent for demolition will go under 30 years in 2013, after having fallen to 30.1 from 32.4 years in 2012, Drewry said in its latest Dry Bulk Forecaster report.
A similar situation is observed in the Panamax vessels amid strengthening of the larger Post-Panamax type on the market.
According to Drewry's preliminarily data, in the fourth quarter of 2012 a total of 6.8 million deadweight tonnes (dwt) were scrapped, twice as much compared with the same period a year ago.
Further, almost 11 million dwt of Capesize tonnage was scrapped, or more than the overall dry bulk tonnage sent for demolition in 2009, Drewry said.
The record-high scrapping activity in 2012 among the shipowners was prompted by weak freight rates. However, such initiative will not lead to improvement in the freight rates due to the growing new tonnage, Drewry underscored.
The global fleet of dry bulkers rose by 12.3% on the year to 679 million dwt in 2012. A total of 28 million dwt are slated for delivery in 2013, most of which will be in the Post-Panamax and very large ore carrier (VLOC) sectors.
The freight market is not forecast to improve in 2013, Drwery said, adding that more dry bulk shipping companies will have financial problems.

New recycling plant for south China

A leading European environmental service provider will build a ship demolition facility in south China's Guangdong Province, a local publicity official said Friday.

Veolia Environment's south China plant will be its first modern ship demolition research and development center, as well as an advanced ship demolition plant that can demolish freighters with a light displacement of up to 800,000 tonnes, said Lin Yingqing, deputy director of the publicity department of the Xinhui District of the city of Jiangmen, where the plant will be located.

Veolia will spend about 1 billion yuan (161 million U.S. dollars) to complete the plant's construction within three years.

Major products, including renewable materials, recycling equipment and solid waste, will be purchased or dealt with by relevant organizations.

Xinhui has been a primary center for ship demolition over the last three decades and the new plant is hoped to solve related environmental issues, increase efficiency and reduce potential safety hazards, Lin said.

National ferry Fortnight

Seafarers’ charity welcomes launch of National Ferry Fortnight
Seafarers’ charity the Apostleship of the Sea has welcomed the 2013 launch of National Ferry Fortnight and the focus it gives to the hard work of ferry crews. Each year the Passenger Shipping Association promotes a National Ferry Fortnight. This year’s two-week event will take place from 2-16 March. The fortnight is designed to improve awareness of the UK’s 50 ferry routes.
In ports around Great Britain, and around the world, the port chaplains of the Apostleship of the Sea visit ferry crews, to support the crew when needed and to lend a friendly face and a listening ear, providing practical and spiritual support for each and every crew member.
Ferry crews and staff are, without a doubt, one of the critical success factors for a safe and smooth voyage. Happy, professional crew not only enhance the passengers’ experience, but also promote the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. However, being a member of crew on a ship can be stressful. Factors such as prolonged separation from family and the proximity of so many people living and working together can exacerbate the effects of stress on crew members. Outlets and opportunities to talk and be heard for crew are important for their wellbeing so that they can continue to work and live in a professional and happy environment.
The impact of AoS port chaplains is therefore crucial. They offer emotional support to crew and at Christmas and Easter will arrange for religious services for Catholic seafarers from countries such as the Philippines.
